I've had a few conversations recently with people about the three Transport Workers Union contracts that are up for a vote between July 26 and Aug. 24.

One question that came up: Why did the TWU make a "no" vote a vote to authorize a strike against American Airlines, if it came to that?

One TWU guy who wants the tentative agreements voted down said he saw the "no" language as an attempt by TWU leadership to scare members into voting for the contracts because a lot of them aren't ready to go on strike.

I had seen it as the TWU leadership wanting to draw a line in the sand, one that would say to American Airlines (and the National Mediation Board) that members looked at the proposed deal and said it wasn't good enough.
